The Word for World
Overview:
In this project, students will imagine and construct a future United States in which a social issue they care about is resolved through radical change and action. Inspired by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Molly Crabapple's rendering of a future in which the Green New Deal passes and our climate crisis is averted in an illustrated film, students will create their own illustrated film that depicts a better future. Students will study speculative fiction in a class reading of Ursula K. Le Guin's The World for World is Forest, and a selection of short dystopian and utopian stories. They will also learn about The New Deal, The Green New Deal, different social issues in the United States, the United States government, and more.
Essential Questions:
What changes can we envision in order to shift the course of the future and resolve social issues we care about?
How can we depict the path toward a better future?
How do we tell the story of something that hasn’t happened yet?
Devliverables:
Illustrated film
Written product to accompany film detailing plan for change
